Devin McCourty makes bittersweet revelation about Patriots HC Jerod Mayo's coaching staff
David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Jerod Mayo has done a solid job of building up his coaching staff after taking over as head coach of the New England Patriots. And their are a few familiar faces from the Patriots Dynasty.

Dont'a Hightower was brought in as the inside linebackers coach, while Matthew Slater is serving as the “right-hand man” to Mayo. And it seems the head coach also tried to bring in another Patriots legend.

While appearing on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, Devin McCourty was asked if Mayo even approached him about a potential reunion.

“Nah I’m old and washed up. He tried to get me to coach," McCourty said. "That’s his thing with all the older guys. He says, ‘I don’t know if they’ll walk in back to play, but we got a spot for them on the staff.’ But, nah those hours aren’t meant for my life right now.”

Getting the dynamic duo of McCourty and Slater back together on the same coaching staff would be truly been electric. But for right now, that will not be happening.

Slater retired from the game following the 2023 season, but was already back at the facility for the first day of the voluntary offseason program, helping welcome the players.

Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers first said that he believed Slater was serving as an advisor for the team. But it was later clarified what his exact role would be.

“One source described his role as a ‘right-hand man’ to first-year head coach Mayo, providing Mayo a sounding board on football and team building, as well as assistance in ‘people development,’” ESPN's Mike Reiss wrote.

So maybe one day, Mayo and Slater can convince McCourty to join the staff. But right now, that will not be happening.
